Educating yourself and your kids about the causes of obesity in children in America is a part of the key to putting an end to the epidemic.
It's true in sports, business, medicine, and every other facet of life. You need to know what's wrong in order to fix the problem.
Over at least the past 3 decades that I've been witness to, America has gotten fatter. Even with our fascination with sports (on television) as evidenced by the large numbers watching the Superbowl on TV last night, it seems that is all we do -- sit and watch.
Now, I know there are a good number of you that get out of bed each day and participate in some form of exercise; whether it's biking, running, weight training, and a host of other activities.
Guess what? You are the exception in America right now.
If everyone were like you (and I hope that more people want to be like you), the Excellence Through Exercise Foundation might not exist.
ETE's mission is to educate kids and their families on health, fitness, and nutrition while providing fitness programs to communities worldwide and ending child obesity in America.
So, why are so many of our country's chidren suffering from the effects of obesity? Here are 3 Causes of Childhood Obesity along with things you can do to help make a positive impact.
1) Poor Nutrition - Healthy eating seems to be at a minimum today. Even with the availability of healthy eating tips and recipes on the web, it seems the easy thing to do (for parents and kids) is to head to the local fast food restaraunt and load up on calories. My thought is that your nutritional habits are easier to change than your exercise habits. Everyone eats. Not everyone works out (yet). Clean out your cabinets and your fridge and stock up on some healthier meal choices.
2) Too Much Technology - I played video games and watched a lot of TV while I was growing up. Honestly, I probably spent too much time sitting in front of the TV. However, I spent double that amount of time outside, running around, playing a series of kids games, and participating in lots of sports. Even though technology has helped to bring networks of people and professionals closer together, it is making our society more sedentary as a whole. Figure out your ratio of computing:playing for yourself and your kids and set family goals for positive change.
3) Lack of Community Involvement - The adage, "It takes a whole village to raise a child," holds true in our villages, towns, and large cities. One person can make a difference in Advocating Children's Fitness, yet a community working toward a mutual goal will have a profound impact.
