Summer Fun for the Whole Family

How Can I Get the Whole Family involved in Summer Fun?

Summer is a busy time for families, but it should not be an excuse to neglect the health of your family. Look for activities to do together that easily integrate fitness but with fun as your focus. Staying active is really easy in the summertime if you get a little creative. Here are a few tips to get you started.

Tip #1: Play a game together outdoors. Remember the games of our childhood? Red Rover, Red Light Green Light, Four Square, HORSE, baseball, soccer, kickball – I’m sure you can think of a few more. Get the whole family involved in a game. There will be plenty of laughter and fun.

Tip #2: Summer equals water. Whether you own a pool, visit the community pool, enjoy the lake or beach, kids love water. They will play for hours in the water. You can sneak some extra exercise in while they are playing by running in the shallow end while holding your little one. Hold the end of the pool and just kick out your legs for one minute intervals and see who can last the longest. Have races with your older kids to see who can swim the fastest from one designated point to another.

Tip #3: Go for a bike ride. If you have a trail near you, then take advantage of it by going on family bike rides. If you have little ones, there are trailers you can attach to the back of your bike or kid seats that attach to the back of your bike seat. Bring along a picnic in a backpack so you can make a pit stop somewhere to rest and refuel. This could turn into a wonderful family tradition.

Tip #4: Go camping. There is something about sleeping in the great outdoors that causes you to feel more adventurous. Don’t just pick anywhere to go camping. Choose a place that has a lot of physical activities to offer such as, canoeing, kayaking, swimming and hiking. Bring along bikes or rollerblades and hit the trails.

Fitness is a lifestyle that should involve the whole family. Keep moving and having fun. You’ll feel great while building wonderful memories with your kids.
